Monster Hunter Outlanders Palico, Rutaco, Trillan
The three Buddy species on Aesoland, and why matching their class to your Adventurer is the cheapest synergy in the game.
Buddies in Monster Hunter Outlanders are not a Palico-only joke seat. The game keeps the guild cat, then adds two species that only exist on Aesoland. Official copy is short, so this page stays honest about what is confirmed and what is still trailer grammar. Pair it with the Adventurer roster and the class triangle.

Palico — Assault
Palicos “journeyed with Adventurers to Aesoland, skilled with various weapons and items.” Class: Assault.
That is the companion you already know how to read. They hit, they gadget, they sell the fantasy that you did not land on this island alone. In the story, a Palico named Icarus is with the Fated Adventurer from the crash — DualShockers’ CBT writeup treats Icarus as combat support and early-game emotional ballast, which is exactly what Palicos have always been.
Take Palico when:
- You are Assault and you want the hunt to feel like Monster Hunter.
- You are learning a weapon in Classic Mode and you want extra damage, not extra UI.
- Your four-player party already has Support and Disruptor covered.
Skip Palico when your party is four melee Assaults. A second Palico does not create a healer.
Rutaco — Disruptor
Rutaco are “Buddies native to Aesoland, skilled at using tools and Radiantite to build.” Class: Disruptor.
This is the species that makes Outlanders look like a survival craft hunt instead of a portable World. Trailers show monkey-like companions assembling cannons and field tools. Official site art is a small, long-limbed builder, not a cute mascot pasted on top of a Rathalos.
Take Rutaco when:
- You play Disruptor (Raya, Keres, Pepper) and you want the Buddy to lean into control.
- You are about to hunt on a locale where facilities matter — watchtowers, camp guns, Radiantite nodes. The crafting guide is the other half of this pairing.
- Your party’s hole is interrupt, not healing.
Rutaco is also the Buddy to bring on Aesoland exploration days. Building is not a side activity in this spin-off; it is how you get a vantage on a Radiant nest.
Trillan — Support
Trillan are “Buddies native to Aesoland, skilled at using their voices to support Adventurers.” Class: Support.
Owl silhouette, support kit, voice-based buffs. That is all the official sentence gives you, and it is enough to make Trillan the default solo companion. If you are a Great Sword hunter who will not play Madelyn, Trillan is how you fake a Support seat.
Take Trillan when:
- You play Assault or Disruptor and nobody else in the party is Support.
- You are walking into Radiant species and you expect frenzy, poison, or carts.
- You are teaching a friend in co-op and you need a safety net that does not occupy a player slot.
Trillan is not a Palico with feathers. Palico is Assault. If you want heals, stop bringing the cat out of habit.
Pairing table
| Your Adventurer class | Default Buddy | Break the rule when |
|---|---|---|
| Assault (Pyro, Midori, Luka, Ouyang Varen) | Palico | Take Trillan if the party has no Support |
| Disruptor (Raya, Keres, Pepper) | Rutaco | Take Trillan for Radiant poison hunts |
| Support (Madelyn, Arkaya) | Trillan | Take Rutaco if nobody else can interrupt |
| Fated Adventurer (flex) | Match the class you queued | Match the party hole instead |
Same-type Buddies can still look different and carry different skills. Official text says individuals vary. Do not assume two Palicos are clones after launch; CBT loadouts already hinted at appearance and skill variance.
Story and camp
Buddies are not only combat pets. Aesoland’s pitch is gather, build, hunt. Rutaco and Trillan being native species is a lore flag: the island already had companions before the guild arrived. Palicos are the visitors. That is why the getting started hour spends time on camp facilities instead of rushing the first Rathalos.
When you rebuild the coastal village with the Storm Crew, Buddy labor is part of the loop. Cannons, gathering, and voice buffs are how a mobile hunt stays busy between large monsters. If you skip Buddy training because it looks like a side collection, you are skipping a class seat you did not have to gacha.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers for hunters landing on Aesoland.
Are Palicos in Monster Hunter Outlanders?
Yes. Palicos travel to Aesoland with Adventurers and sit in the Assault Buddy seat. They are not the only companion species.
What is a Rutaco?
A monkey-like Buddy native to Aesoland. Disruptor class. Official copy says they use tools and Radiantite to build, including cannons seen in trailers.
What is a Trillan?
An owl-like Buddy native to Aesoland. Support class. They use their voices to buff and sustain Adventurers.
Can I play as a Buddy?
Trailers show Buddies fighting and building. A full Prowler-style control mode has not been confirmed as a launch feature. Treat them as companions until an official mode ships.
Should Buddy class match my Adventurer?
Matching is the simple rule: Palico with Assault, Rutaco with Disruptor, Trillan with Support. If your party is missing a class, break the rule and fill the hole.
