Monster Hunter Outlanders Getting started

What to do after the Rathian brings down the airship — before gacha, Radiants, or Elder Dragons.

Getting Started in Monster Hunter Outlanders

The first hour of Monster Hunter Outlanders is a crash, a village, and a weapon choice. It is not a banner. This page is the order of operations. The TGS trailer below is the fantasy; your phone will be messier.

Minute zero to minute twenty

You are the Fated Adventurer. Commander Freya is on the airship. A Rathian is also on the airship, in the bad way. You wake in jungle with a Palico (Icarus, in CBT writeups) and you work toward a coastal village. Chief Bale and Holly become the humans you remember. The Storm Crew is the name you earn for arriving in a storm.

Do this, in order:

  1. Accept the camp. Craft the facility the quest actually asks for. Do not sprint past crafting because you want a Rathalos thumbnail.
  2. Open controls. Enlarge buttons. Turn on lock-on. If you skip this, you will think the game is bad.
  3. Pick one weapon. Dual Blades or Lance if you are new. Great Sword or Long Sword if you already have the muscle memory. Bow if you cannot stand melee on a phone.
  4. Hunt something smaller than a flagship. A Kulu-line bird or a brute you can see all of.

What to ignore on day one

  • Named Adventurer banners. The roster will still be there tomorrow.
  • Radiant Rathalos. You will cart, then you will write a Reddit post.
  • Decoration theory. We do not have a stable public sheet.
  • Exploring the entire map. Restore one watchtower. Then hunt.

First loadout that does not lie

  • Adventurer: Fated
  • Class: Assault
  • Weapon: Lance or Dual Blades
  • Buddy: Trillan
  • Mode: Adventure for hunt one, Classic for hunt two

That kit survives contact. If you main Dual Blades in World, you can skip Lance. If you have never hunted, Lance’s shield is the tutorial the game should have printed on the box.

First social decision

Add one friend before you add four. Co-op is four seats, but a single competent Support is worth more than a pickup full of Pyros. If you have nobody, stay solo with Trillan until you clear a standard Rathalos.

First resource decision

Spend gather on camp and potions, not on a cosmetic. Energy on dedicated hunts is the scarce thing later. In hour one you should still be roaming the overworld, where CBT testers could fight and gather without that gate.

When the first hour is over

You are done getting started when:

  • You finished a hunt without hitting the wrong skill three times in a row.
  • You know whether Classic Mode is usable on your phone.
  • You restored a watchtower.
  • You can name Assault, Disruptor, and Support without looking at the class page.

Then read how to play and pick a Radiant Kulu as your next exam, not Ruger Aidal.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers for hunters landing on Aesoland.

What is the first thing I should do in Monster Hunter Outlanders?

Finish the crash sequence, meet Bale and Holly, craft the first camp facilities, and pick a weapon you can actually hit with.

Should I spend on Adventurers in hour one?

No. Play the Fated Adventurer. Named kits matter after you know a class.

Adventure Mode or Classic Mode first?

Adventure Mode for the first hunt if you have never played Monster Hunter. Switch to Classic the same session if the three-button kit feels like a toy.

When do I fight Rathalos?

After you can complete a smaller hunt without carting twice. Rathalos is calibration, not the tutorial.

Do I need friends on day one?

No. Solo with Trillan if you want a safety net. Co-op becomes important on Radiant hunts.
